Our Position on Abstinence
“Sexually transmitted infections” is a term used for a large number of different viruses and bacteria that are spread via sexual contact (vaginal sex, oral sex, anal sex or touching of the genitals). Besides causing embarrassment, emotional distress, and financial hardship, these infections can cause long term physical consequences. These consequences include, but are not limited to, infertility (being unable to get pregnant), organ damage, genital warts, scarring of the fallopian tubes leading to ectopic pregnancy (more commonly called tubal pregnancy), cervical cancer, and even death.
Some sexually transmitted infections will stay in the body for life and require on-going medical treatment. These treatments are often expensive and even uncomfortable.
A person’s risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection increases dramatically with every new sexual partner. If used exactly as instructed, condoms can decrease the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections. The only 100% effective prevention method is abstinence because every sexually transmitted infection can be spread by any type of sexual activity.
Abstinence is a decision of a person not to have any sexual activity until he or she is in a committed marital relationship. It is the position of this facility that abstinence is the best and most effective way to prevent sexually transmitted infections and the many hardships that accompany them.
