Understanding the Grieving Process
- Relief
- Denial and rationalization: Your initial relief fades, and you become troubled. The feeling is covered by not admitting what has happened and possibly making up reasons about why you shouldn’t feel troubled.
- Realization and shock: You begin to understand what’s happened, and it can be confusing. Depending on the person, you may skip back to denial or move forward to the next step of the process.
- Anger and depression: This is the most painful stage, where the full force of the abortion hits you. You might feel angry, betrayed, grief stricken or depressed. Thoughts of suicide may tug at you, and you may begin other destructive behaviors like drinking or drug use. Be careful about making decisions during this time. Your feelings are absolutely normal and shared by thousands of women. Now is the time to seek out a counselor or close friend.
- Acceptance: Eventually you will heal. The fact of your abortion will not change, but you can move forward healthfully. Despite what you may feel now, your life is not over. You may need help to reach this point.
