Our Position on Birth Control

Birth control is the common term used for medications and devices used to prevent pregnancy. Many forms of birth control are available. These methods may consist of taking a daily pill, receiving a shot at certain intervals, having a device inserted into the uterus, or various other methods.

The majority of birth control methods consist of adding some kind of hormones to a woman ’s body to manipulate the menstrual cycle. Most of these methods are relatively safe, although risks do exist, especially if a person is over 35 years of age, has high blood pressure, smokes cigarettes or has other health issues.

In general, hormonal birth control works by preventing ovulation, which is the time in a woman’s cycle when an egg is released from an ovary and is able to be fertilized by a sperm cell. Another way birth control hormones work is by thinning the lining of the uterus (the organ that carries a baby during pregnancy), which can prevent an already fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus and beginning to develop into a healthy pregnancy.

It is the position of this center that life begins when an egg is fertilized by a sperm cell. If a fertilized egg (a new life) is prevented from implanting into the uterus because of birth control hormones, the pregnancy is unable to continue. A pregnancy that is cut short by other than natural means is considered abortion.

This facility does not advocate, perform or refer people for abortions. For these reasons, this facility also does not distribute or refer people for birth control. We recommend abstinence as the only 100% effective way to avoid unplanned pregnancy
